DriveLock Virtual SmartCard bypasses the traditional plastic smart card

Virtual smartcards use the security element in your computer to securely store cryptographic keys, execute cryptographic commands with these keys, and protect the user PIN.

A DriveLock Virtual SmartCard implements the entire smart card stack, including

  • a PCSC reader driver
  • a smartcard platform and
  • an applet or profile down to protocol level.

This ensures security, interoperability with existing applications and manageability. 

The DriveLock Virtual SmartCard supports the TPM chip or the secure Intel IPT element. Both ensure the secure storage of cryptographic keys, the secure execution of cryptograms and the anti-hammering of the user PIN.

The Virtual SmartCard includes the appropriate middleware

To use a virtual smart card optimally, the correct Middleware is required.

The DriveLock SmartCard Middleware is an enterprise-class middleware that fully integrates the virtual smartcard into the operating system and provides a standards-based interface for applications that use smartcards with digital certificates in a PKI environment.

The DriveLock SmartCard Middleware supports Microsoft Windows CryptoAPI and CNG as well as the platform-independent PKCS11 (CryptoKI). This ensures the best possible support for applications and management systems.

Typical applications are:

  • User login for a Windows domain,
  • TLS server authentication,
  • Smartcard redirection for Remote Desktop and VDI,
  • S / MIME email encryption and signing,

In addition to the TPM chip, the DriveLock Virtual Smartcard also supports Intel's Software Guard Extension Technology (SGX ©). This technology administers the executable program code and data of the virtual smart card in a specially secured memory area. Thus protecting against any possible malware interruptions.
