Unintended data loss has become a bigger danger than theft of confidential information. Employees routinely exchange large amounts of data with co-workers, customers and business partners. Laptops extend the workplace into public spaces. In this envrionment it's easy to lose a flash drive or become the victim of laptop theft. There's no way to predict how the finder or thief will use your confidential data that's stored on these devices.

The most effective and easiest protection against this type of threat is encryption, which effectively prevents any unauthorized access to the data. As a result, the damage caused by a lost or stolen laptop or flash drive is just the replacement cost. You won't have to worry about the costly effects of data disclosure, which typically ends up being more expensive than the value of the hardware.

When looking for effective protection, ensure that you are really getting effective data protection. Hard disk passwords, which you can configure on most laptops, do not provide encrpytion and only protect your data against amateur hackers.

You choose whether to encrypt the entire device or only a portion of it. A built-in wizard lets you create an encrypted container and burn it to a CD or DVD. The Mobile Encryption Application, which can be automatically added to each storage device, provides full access to encrypted devices and containers on any computer, without requiring administrative privileges.

If a user forgets a DriveLock Encryption 2-Go password, there's a robust, secure recovery mechanism. Offline recovery lets you give a recovery code to a user over the phone using a challenge/response mechanism. There's no need to transmit any central passwords that would allow access to other encrypted devices.

Full Disk Encryption

DriveLock Full Disk Encryption provides security for all data on internal hard drives, including the operating system and all temporary files. It includes pre-boot authentication to ensure that only authorized users can gain access to any data on the disk and single sign-on let users get to the Windows desktop without being bothered by multiple logon prompts. All encryption operations happen in the background and the process is completely transparent to users.

If a user forgets the logon password, an emergency logon feature lets you create a one-time logon code to restore access. If Windows no longer starts because of damage to the disk or other problems, there's Fast Recovery, which lets you start the computer using a recovery CD and copy business-critical data from the computer. The entire process only takes a few minutes.
